Hi - Can anyone give me a basic rundown of my 02 SL 500,s rear susspension.
I have a lovely 02 Mercedes SL 500.Which has been costing me a small fortune lately.
After an expensive (2.5k) service and a recent electrical failure it has now developed a susspension problem - a very noisy "bang" when I run over any , pothole - raised manhole cover - or bump in the road , the noise is coming from the rear, passenger side , and when I had a look round I noticed its slightly lower on the passenger side over the back wheel (consequently the other side has a lareger wheel to arch gap ) I.E. if you stand directly behind the car its slightly down on the LHS.
Ive been spending a small fortune lately , largely on technical electronic units and other techy parts .
Please can someone tell me that the rear suss is good old fashioned springs dampers and wishbones - and not some mega expensive ECU controlled , limited slip , hydro gas, heliomagnetic - hybrid racing set up.
It,d be sad to see her go.

 

can you take the wheel off and look at the spring? does your car come with an adaptive suspension? are the shocks oem and specifically for a 129? the 129 part # will be stamped right on the shock. I was drove crazy with a knock back there. took it in to have it fixed and it still knocked. in this case, some local bone-head servicer put shocks on it for a 124. the shocks look the same except in the lenghts of the spacer sleaves. when I installed the right shocks myself, I didn't tighten the washers tight against the shock spacer sleave, so it still knocked. corrected that and all has been well. you may just need to go in and tighten down the top nut on your shock. now the sagging is something else.
