yes.

they can melt the joint by using some chemical similar to acetone (i dunno what it is).

Today I took the instrument cluster to a plastics fabricator, who was reluctant to try and separate the part. (especially when I told him the replacement cost I would have to pay if he cracked the lens cover). He injected some solvent into the joint and we managed to prise the two parts far enough apart on the bottom edge to insert the burr walnut panel. Not a job I would recommend for the thrifty faint hearted!
