W140 500SE - Engine not starting
Hi all,
I bought this car some months ago and it was running ok, before delivery. The day I was taking it over, it was dead. Seller discounted hard, so I took it home on a trailer. However, it still isnīt running. I have tried a lot, see below, but it is still only making a few coughs when cranking. It does not run on gas directed into the inlet, and there is a visual spark from a wired plug. The car, 1992, has no infrared remote control, but the old-fashioned start key.
I cleared a lot of failure codes, but a new single one appeared in the Star Diagnosis: - 117 no reception from the EZ N1/3.
Anyone having a clue to the next step?
Thanks,
Roland K
Items checked or changed:
Battery voltage ok
Coil resistance ok
Fuel pressure ok
CPS resistance ok
Cam pos sensor resistance ok
MAF changed
Throttle valve unit changed
ECU checked at shop - no faults
Ignition unit changed

Have you inspected the wire harness? In that time period, MB used a biodegradable wiring insulation, that happened to biodegrade way too soon. You should cut open a couple of bundles of wires and looked for cracked insulation / exposed wires. Should only take a few minutes.
As for resistance checks on the CPS - I am not sure that tells the entire story.

Thanks Fred,
you got me on track. The wire bundle from injectors, MAF, etc was completely rotten under the plastics.
I am considering whether to follow the procedure on this excellent forum at:
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w140...e-base-11.html
or to go for the MB $600+ solution.

If you have the patience, go for it. Somebody on a different forum tried this, and got it all screwed up. So, it can happen. Just be careful.
As much as I hate buying anything from the dealer, I'd buy the harness. Maybe you can talk them down to cost since this is a known issue. Maybe the zone rep can help. It IS a ling shot, but it may save you some bucks.
