Default V-12 Spark plug cables

I've changed a lot of spark plug cables but this one is something else. I just bought a 92 600 SEL and decided to do some tunnig up (cracked cables) but I had to sit back and think about the cables. Looks like they run into a conduit after a short loop right after the cup. Does anybody happen to knwo what needs to be done before I rip it apart? Regards.

Dont' ask me. I broke a few of mine when I removed them from my SL. They cost $65 each, so be careful.

As far as I can tell, you just pull up on the ring that's a few inched above each plug. You just need to change the short pieces from the plugs to the "conduit." The problem for me was the boots were baked on after 70K miles. I used the claw on a claw hammer to hook the ring and jerked it up gently until the boots broke loose. I let the weight of the hammer do the work. Unfortuanately, it wasn't gentle enough.

When you install new ones or reinstall the existing ones, smear some dielectric grease on the inside of each boot so they don't get baked on.

It's a cocktail shooter.

Spark Plug

Pour 1/2 shot Bacardi 151 rum in a shot glass first, then pour 1/2 shot Rumple Minze on top, do not mix. Hold on to something sturdy and "shoot it."

BTW - Rumple Minze, or Rumpleminze, is a 100 proof (50% ABV) German schnapps with a very strong peppermint flavor.

Rumpleminze is good stuff and easy to find over here in Germany.

After a couple of Spark Plugs you'll be wired for a while.

You my friend are in for a real treat A tune-up on one of those is pretty damn expensive. (2 distributor caps and 2 rotors) --> (cap approx. $85ea and rotors $65ea - this is the online price -- dealer wants $140ea for dist. cap and $95ea for rotor)

Shop labor on swapping out the plug wires on that car is an hour - AFTER the intake manifold has been removed, so this should give you an idea of what kind of job you are looking at. Also, the plug wires can cost you a small fortune. Some of the sponsors of this site have better deals than most places, but still pretty steep.

BEFORE YOU THINK ABOUT TOUCHING IT, pop the plastic front engine covers off and take a VERY close look at the engine wiring harness coming down the center/top of the engine. It's the one that connects to your temp sensor, cam sensors, etc.. The early 90s 600s are known to have bad wiring harnesses (along with several other models of the early 90s). Look closely to see if the insulation is coming off the wires. It should be pretty obvious. If you can see that it's crumbling off the wires DO NOT EVEN TOUCH IT, as when you start to move those wires the insulation crumbles off and then the wires short together and then things can get REALLY ugly. If it is bad, then you need to make a decision on what you want to do, as the dealer wants between $2 to $3k for a wiring harness for one of those cars.

I don't want to scare you, but make sure you check it out, because if that wiring harness starts to short out, it can take some very expensive components with it, like the throttle actuators at approx. $2.5K each.

Hope this info helps you.
