Default Shifting Issue, Low Tanny Fluid?

I have a 2002 s500, there seems to be a delaying when going into gear but is fine after that, how do I check the a/t fluid level? is there a dip stick? what ifI only need a top up can I do that without going to the dealer?

thanks

Need to buy a dipstick and a replacement anti tamper device or go to dealer.
Search for details how to make a dipstick under Bazzle. Very important level is checked at correct temperature.
Use MB oil only.
At high mileage >100k a change of oil sometimes helps.
All depends exactly what you mean by delay into gear.
Apart from these two tips next best step is to get Trans DTC's scanned to provide additional data.
Maybe expensive.

In addition to snanceki's comment, it is helpful to note that the S500 transmission computer adjusts the "liveliness" of the shifts according you your driving style which it analyzes. Jah. Icht bein German. I know it sounds crazy, but Germans are machines.

So if you're not a wild driver, don't expect to shift into low gear when you leave a green light intersection. Also, warm up car to about 60-80C in the winter. Otherwise the transmission will rev at higher ranges to heat up the engine.
