Well I just got an email in response from my local Mercedes dealership and they say that Mercedes has recently changed there recommendation to 5W40 Mobil1. HMMM has anyone else heard this?

Ask to see the recommendation from Mercedes. I suggest they won't be prepared to show you since i dout it exists.

MB don't recommend oil by brand, rather they state that the oil must meet their specification XYZ.

Oil manufacturers then get approval from MB that their oil does, or does not meet, the required MB spec.

MB MAY actually specify Mobil 1 oil due to their joint advertising / marketing programme with Mobil but this doesn't mean that MB don't approve brands like Castrol, Exxon etc.
