Default Mercedes Benz S600

I have an opportunity to buy a 2003 S600 with 103,000 miles. Is this vehicle a nightmare to maintain? I'm driving it now and I've also noticed something quirky with the vanity mirrors. is there a trick to get the mirror to lock in place?

it willbe a ightmare to maintain if it wasnt maintained in the first place. With the V12, just be honest about what you getting into.
No, you wont get Prius gas mileage and if MPG is high priority then a V12 shoud not be in the same sentence.
Yes, tune ups will cost bit more than a run of the mill 6 cyliner because you have twice as many plugs, two filters, and twice as many electronics. \
Some things will be labor intensive because the engine bay dont have as much room as the V8 and some things is a pain to get to.
Yes, once you step on a pedal of a V-12 everything else will seem like a slug.
Yes, it's still a Mercedes that cost 100,000 odd new and regardless of age at the dealership it will cost more than a Ford Focus to fix.
Yes, S600 will ,make you feel like a million buck.
Yes, those things can eat miles of highways withut fuss.
Yes, it's one of the smoothest engines you can place in any car out there.
You might get a few electical gremlins here and there but shouldnt be nothing outside the norm of the W220.

As far as drivetrain, the V-12 is MBZ company's baby. It is their prize, it is their platinum, it s their rep and their V-12s by whole are known to be sturdy as hell and few hick-ups out side the normal W220 glithes. 2003 is said to be the point where most of those quirks een worked out.
Before you buy, might want to make sure the service records is up to date especially the 100,000 mile one because iirc from the book, the 100,000 is the big one. Unless, of course, you plan on getting it done yourself. And then the car should be priced accordingly. And dont be afaid to get a third party to check it out to makew sure it's ok and dont be afraid to ask the person why they sell. Sometimes jokers try to hide a problem they dont want to fix, polish the car up good, and pass it on to the next person.

I havent played with the mirrors in the W220 enough to learn the tricks.

a well maintained Mercedes is a dream to own. A non-maintained Mercedes is one that'll make you miss your worse nightmares.
