Default Do I Need A Alternator? Help please

My 86 560 sel died coming home earlier, it was as if it was out of gas but it had quarter of tank still left. When the car died I was near a gas station and I went and put more gas in, but unfortunately it still died I ended up calling a tow truck because it would start and then die right afterwards, the man told me it might be the alternator and that the battery isnt staying charged long enough? Do you think that would explain the reason for it dying?
Thank Ya's

Did you ever replace the Plug wires like we said? If so it may be the alternator. Also if it is the alternator assuming Mercedes uses the same alt. in the 300sdl as the 560's (which i dont know) u can just replace the brushes in the alternator and save some money.

Sounds like Sleepwalker should help on this one.

I did what Lugnut told me to do and it turned out just one of the wires was lose and the shaking stopped. Then this happened, the battery was doing this for quite awhile but now its actually dying after we get it started. He told me to go to a auto place to have them check it, thats if I can get it to run long enough to get it there. When the battery started to do this we switched out the battery and it still did it. I just decided to see what kind of suggestions I would get since there is a good chance I wont be able to drive it anywhere. My father is away right now or I would have him looking at it. If its any easier I could use Instant Messenger?
Thanks a bunch,
Ash

a few questions to ask.
does your car crank but not start?
or does it not crank there is a difference.
one is battery related one is fuel related
