Carbon Filter Button

I just bought my2000 S500 about 3 months ago.
When the windows are open and I want to close them all quickly because of a oncoming dirt cloud. I understand that I can push the Carbon Filter Button to close all windows until I pass dirtcloud and thenpush the Carbon Filter Button again and the windows will reopen to previous location.
Problem is my system has to be on to use this feature.
My question is..
Why would I have to have my system on if my windows are down.
Do I need to change something so I can operate this feature without having my system on?
Thanks in advance for your help.
