hello, new here and im looking into buying a mb. what im looking for is an s500 2000+. i took a test drive in a 2000 s500 and really liked it. the asking is 29900 with 82000 miles. body and interior is in excellent condition. motro runs smooth. i have no experience with mercedes so i wanted to know if this is a good selling price. are there and problems that i should look for in this model and year?

i know this is a mb site so im sure everyone is partial to benz and i would rather have the benz but my father in law is pushing for the bmw. can i get some feedback on pros and cons between bmw and mb? i guess teh equal competitor to the s500 would be the 745.

i still would prefer S500. better in road handling, easy operation and lighter.

i work on both MB and BMW dealerships and often drive test different cars. in my own opinion on technical side, the bmw design is very funny. they make the simple system to become complicated. everyday i troubleshoot these bmw's using Group Tester One computer, and it was a slow and annoying procedure. (the british designs most of this bmw systems).

still in my own opinion... mercedes-benz design is more advanced, functional and detailed. on a good S500 engine, you can put the coin on its side on top of the engine and it wont fall down! very smooth running.

 

I would just be cautious of the electrical system! It seemed like my 2000 S500 was always having an electrical problem of some kind. Even after I was in an accident and took it to the shop the guy asked me about any electrical problems with it because the 2000 was the change in the S500 model and I guess that was the biggest issue with them. That and my damn cup holder broke like the month after it went off warranty. Otherwise I loved the car it drove smoothly and to this day still does I do alot of highway travel and it is the best for long trips. Being a young female in one was not always fun though always felt like I was in my moms car or a mistress to some old guy.

 

If you want to understand the difference between the S500 and the 745 you have to test drive them both. The S-Class is more smooth running and gives you more comfort, but on the other hand the 7-Series has that agressive look that will make anyone driving in front of you move to the side of the road as soon as they see you in the rearview. The S-Class has that design that in time becomes a classic and everyone remembers it as one of the best cars in history (for example Russians worship the W140). Just don't forget that the BMW has one thing that no other car has... ANGEL EYES! I think that angel eyes is one of the best designer inventions ever to be applied to a car! It gives any bimmer a million dollar look... So first u have to decide on what u need - if you want the comfort and practicality - take the S500, but if you want the aggresiveness and the "Angel Eyes" - go with the 745.

It's just my opinion. The 2000 Series S-Class is a girls car. If you've noticed the new 2007 has reached back to the size of the W140 S-Class. YES! MAN SIZE! that's what we need to be dealing with. No Pun Intended.

 

i bought a 00 s500 about 8 months ago, so far no major problems. love the car.
my advice to you is go over the car a few times before buying it.
look for any signs of accidents. and test drive it more then one time.
