AC Vent Malfunction / Dimmer Light Switch

AC Vent Malfunction / Dimmer Light Switch
I have been resurrecting a 1982 300SD and it looks sweet and runs well but has a few lingering issues I've been unable to resolve and could use some suggestions. While my AC blows cold, it does not blow out of the dash vents. It blows hard out of the console vent to the rear and the defroster and heat vents. Almost nothing comes out of the dash vents. Occassionally, I will hear a thump on rough starting and then I will get air blow robustly from the dash vents until you make a selection change. It's inconsistent. Also, I need a suggestion on how to remove and replace the dash light dimmer switch. My dash lights have always been extremely dim and the dual purpose odometer reset / dimmer switch has been testy since I obtained the vehicle, however now I have absolutely no dash lights at all. No amount of carefull setting will find a spot that they will "pop" on with. It makes nighttime driving difficult and I would like to repair it or just find a way to circumvent the dimmer ( I don't think I've ever actually dimmed my dash lights ever in my life ).
Please help me with removal, replacement or any other information about these issues you may have.
Thank you
Jim
