Default 95' S420 Sluggish on Reverse / Tranny Slippage?

Hi:

My 95 S420 has 156K miles on it. The automatic transmission started acting strange this past week. On level ground when I shift to R it takes a while before it shifts/engages and when it engages it goes very slowly, you hardly hear it engage or feel the engagement. I tried testing on an incline going in reverse back up the hill and it would not back up at all, as if the transmission is slipping. The engine revs. up and the car does not have the power to reverse up the hill. Again it is not as noticeable on level ground but it goes very slow, and still if you push on the gas it revs. up but reverses with lack of power. No problem in shifting forward when on D all gears work fine, engage fine and gives me full power from the engine going forwards!!!

Does anyone have a clue what is wrong? or how big of a problem is this? Can this be just a linkage adjustment or some kind of pressure/ vacuum leak/ modulator malfunction or is it a more serious matter? Any way to troubleshoot and go through a process of elimination?

Any hints or help in this matter is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Sam

please do not drive the car anymore for it will cause big damage.

take it to the mechanic and repleace the mullti-disk in B3 or reverse.

check the lip seal and plunger too.

Thanks Sleepwalker:

How difficult is this to do. I am not a mechanic, but I am pretty handy. Is this something complicated to do? Do you have any schematics or any service manual pics that could help? Any special tools needed?

Your assistance is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi John:

How do you get the fluid out of the converter? Is there a separate plug for that, or a special tool to suck it out?

Thanks for your help.

using a large screw driver gently turn the fly wheel round . you will find another drain plug in the housing.it takes a bit to do but it is there. regards john
