Default '88 420 SEL help

Hello everyone, i hope someone can guide me in the right direction. I have a 1988 420 SEL, the problem i have is that the car starts up fine but when its on the road, it completely shuts off and all the dashboard lights light up and the fuel economy guage goes to red. After this happens, i have to restart that car and that seems to work until the next trip.
any tips? suggestion?
