Hi guys,
I have 1993 400sel, she will not start...when the key is turned only the warrning lights come on and there is no sound of engine cranking nor klicking. I could hear the fuel pump working, but other than that .....nothing is happening.

Could it be the anti-theft system in these cars that does this....?

Very confused.....please help.

The car was running great two days ago....no shakes

you have to had it checked.

there's a smaller wire going to the starter solenoid.

see if there's 12 volts while turning the key to start position.

 

starter checked...it was fine. The shop told me it could be the factory alarm.
is it possible?
The alarm sometimes would go off when I open the door, my drivers door will not lock with the key nor with the remote.
...?

I am hoping that the same thing has not happened to your car as it has to mine.
I also have a 400sel and out of the blue the car stopped and never started again,exactly the same symptoms as yours.
All dash lights lit up but the car would not turn over.
I thought it was a starter problem etc.
My mechanic hauled it away and gave me the bad news after stripping it down.The PLASTIC (yes on an expensive car) guide rail broke causing the chain to jump a cog resulting in the valves hammering into the pistons.No advance warning whatsoever,
Alot of built up silt type oil stuck to the covers suggested poor service during it life.
Cost to repair almost 2800 Euro.plus
Needless to say I am on the look out for a donor
You will have to strip down the engine and investigate.
ANYONE WHO HAS NOT CHANGED THE TIMING CHAIN ON THESE CARS AFTER BUYING REALLY SHOULD ASAP>

my car didn't stop during driving, I couldn't lock my drivers door....and the engine has no leakage orany other issues.

 

I spoke today to a mechanic who is checking the car.....he says it could be the starter harness.

sleepwalker was it the harness that you were talking about?

how much does that thing cost, and also how much is it to replace?

I have a 1993 400sel turns over and sounds like its almost starting .. but just won't, as soon as you let go of the key it stops sounding like its about to start. I need to fix this before school!!

Anyone with the same problem , plz help!!
