Default transmission won't shift out of first gear-'99 ml430
135k miles, have never noticed a problem before with transmission. fluid level okay. any ideas?

It may be in the limp mode, that would make it stuck in the second gear. Is your check engine light ON? My guess would be faulty speed sensor inside the transmission or faulty transmission module. I'm not sure if disconnecting your battery will not reset the module.
