New to forum question about extending the factory warranty on my ml
Hi everyone,
I am new to the forum and I have a star certified ml350 2006 with 70,000km (40,000 miles) on it and it is coming to the end of its factory warranty. I have the major power train left with the star certified but Mercedes is offering to extend the road side assistance and bumper to bumper warranty through Mercedes for 2 more years for approx $2500.000 inc the taxes. I understand the peace of mind and insurance part of it I guess I am wondering whether this particular model would be a good one to take a chance on and go without the warranty or whether there have been a few problems with the model and I would be wise to take the warranty. Any opinions would be appreciated, Thank you all in advance.

Its a very tough decision if you don't have extra cash to spend on the warranty. Keep in mind that the warranty will only last another few years (3 I believe). So sooner or later you will be left without a warranty again. There are other non MB warranties you can get though after the fact.
In regards to weather or not you should get the warranty depends on your car and how its been for the past years you had it. If its a problematic car, it would make sense to get a warranty. Otherwise you can chance it, with star certified will provide additional 2 years for transmission and engine but anything else would cost.
Besides you can take it to other non MB shops which don't charge as much and perhaps save some $ there. I have a few friends who drive audi and porsche and they don't have warranty on them at all.

You're right it is a hard decision a gamble really that your car isn't going to be as reliable as what you had hoped. In the end I bought the warranty through MB, they gave me a credit for the Star Certified so I ended up with the Bumper to bumper for 2 years and Star certified for 3 for about $2500 tax in. I may have been alright without it but in the end I didn't think it was inconceivable that I could have $1,000 dollars worth of repairs a year over the next 2. I may end up selling at the end of the 2 year bumper to bumper, the car won't have a lot of k's serviced by Mercedes and still have the balance of the Star certified.
I read on another forum similar topic, and some one there broke it down to this: if you think about it, all it really is to you is a peace of mind. With that in mind if you divide your 2500 by 3 years (1095 days) you will get 2.25$ per day for your warranty, which is not so bad considering if you have broken parts which might exceed the cost of warranty quite fast.
I don't know if I would say my vehicle is unreliable but what I would say is that parts and service are very, very expensive. So my thoughts are am I prepared to pay $800 a year to Mercedes for repairs? Probably yes its an expensive car and I accept that. So that being the case, why not pay it up front and buy the warranty because I really don't want to have to pay any more than that and if you search these forums ... people have.
