ml320 transmission

Hi Gerhard, thanks for the info. Sadly, I'm in Cape Town and no MB independent reliable mechie I know of. So, it's to the dealer on Tuesday and we shall see what happens (soonest they could take it). I suspect it is the same problem. Will be interesting to compare prices. Nevertherless, I'm glad you got yours sorted. They really are great vehicles. Will let you know the result next week. Rgds, Jacques.

Hullo
I have 1999 Ml 320. My problem seems similar to yours but different in that my car shifts gears very well when still cold and would be ok for all the distance if ido not stop any where. Once i travel for some distance and stop, and i try switching on again then it does not shift out of second gear. When i shift from Parking to reverse the change is very erratic and the same goes for the drive gear. Once it does this then it gets stuck in second gear.
I have changed the transmission fluid with Mercedes benz one and the filter but still no sucess.

fixed
Hi Gerhard and all, I finally got the car back on Friday and fixed. It took them, the dealer's mechanics, a while 'cos there was no fault code. Eventually, they discovered the gearshift mechanism was rusting and corroding. This is the box in which the gear lever sits. Cause? Some idiot, not me, along the line spilt coke, or beer, or coffee into it! So, not a failure on the car's part. Yusuf, maybe you can have yours checked out for this. I should have suspected this was where the fault lay, because the gear lever did not sit properly in place, eg, when in drive, or reverse, etc it was slightly off centre. Also, difficultish to move smoothly. The cost came to R8600 (about US$1200), with the replacement gearshift mechanism being around R6400. Comments?

Same problem was asked. The owner forgot his sunroof open in the rain, causing his problem. If I remember correctly, there was a pic/diagram in the post how to fix it yourself. I bought new rear mudflaps form MB last week for R2000,00, only to find out they charge me R500,00 for 10 little clips my truck already have factory fitted, and R200,00 for 10 self tapping screws. Hope they will give me a refund, when I collect the front mudflaps tuesday (another R2000,00), when I take the C200K for a B-service.
