Default LOW GEAR Not Working...???

Ok I just purchased an '03 ML350, and followed the procedure in the owners manual to activate low gearing... when i press the button the LOW GEAR light flashes 4 times then does not stay lit... it also does not engage low gearing.... any ideas?

It also flashes 5 times when I start the car... Does the ML have a common problem that may explain whats wrong...? I am really limited with funds to fix this and would hate to pay $150+ just to have this diagnosed at the dealer...

What are all the possible things that could be wrong???

Make sure it is in neutral , and not rolling when you shift into low range. That is all I can think of.

Its in neutral, flat pavement..... holding the brake pedal down, and then i touch the LOW GEAR button and it just flashes 5 times, but doesnt stay lit, or even engage... sound like the motor... any other ideas?

flashes 4 times?

it means that it recognise the command to shift, but the action is not completed.

it can be a problem on the actuator motor.

there is also a position sensor inside that actuator motor. if that sensor is faulty, you need to replace it with the motor.
