98 ML320 almost starts and then dies

change your crank position sensor...
change your crank position sensor. i had a leaky radiator fill tank
some time back. the water would drip onto the crank position sensor
which sits pretty much below the water reservoir. black about 4" long
bolts on with 1 bolt. Probably your problem. part was about 35 - 50$
back when I did this approx 10 years ago. DIY easy. The ML
is now left at a 2nd house but I keep a CPS in the glove box just in case.
