2002 ml500 nav/radio not reading cd

2002 ml500 nav/radio not reading cd
i have a 2002 ml500 with nav. i insert cd and radio unit does not read. it has error message of please insert cd-rom. also there is a flashing cd on main screen. any help would be greatly appreciated.
