Default Full Carbon-Ceramic Brake Setup for GLE/GLS W167 — Rear Axle Solution

Hi everyone,

I’d like to share an interesting technical solution that could be useful for Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS owners with the W167 chassis, particularly those whose vehicles come equipped with factory carbon-ceramic brakes — but only on the front axle.

As many know, the W167 platform offers carbon-ceramic brakes from the factory exclusively on the front. The rear brakes remain standard steel, which results in an incomplete setup — both visually and technically.

The good news is: there’s a proper solution.

It is possible to retrofit a carbon-ceramic brake system on the rear axle, creating a fully balanced configuration — in both function and appearance.

What components are used?
These are original Mercedes-Benz parts sourced from models like:
  • W223 (S-Class)
  • W232 (SL)
  • W290 (AMG GT 4-door)
and possibly others where carbon-ceramic brakes are fitted on both front and rear axles.
🔧 Rear Rotor Dimensions:
380Χ32 mm, carbon-ceramic. These rotors offer excellent thermal resistance and wear performance, with sizing sufficient for heavy-duty or high-performance applications.

Installation Method:
Because the rear axle design on the GLE/GLS W167 differs from the models mentioned above, installation is done using specially engineered adapters, which allow proper fitment without modifying factory mounts or braking geometry.
🔧 What this setup delivers:
  • Full carbon-ceramic braking on all four corners
  • 100% OEM components — no aftermarket compromises
  • Reduced unsprung weight on the rear axle
  • A clean, symmetric look behind open-style wheels
  • Enhanced braking balance and performance
For those looking to complete their factory ceramic setup with a matching rear system, this is a functional and well-integrated solution.

Has anyone else explored this kind of upgrade? It would be great to hear your thoughts or experiences!
