Default whining noise coming from the rear

could anyone help me. I have a 91 300e and I have a whining noise that sounds like it is coming from the rear end when I deccelerate. it also does it noticably when I have the cruise on and I am going down hill. can anyone tell me what it might be and also possible steps to prevent or fix the problem.

Thanks, Frankie

Leave the wife at home or have her sit up front.

When you change your gear oil, look closely and check for abnormal wear, bad bearing/seals, or any "play" in the gears!!! Useually you can tell where the piniongear and ring gear meet, which should be in the center. If there is wear on the outside or inside of the ring gear your backlash is out of adjustment. That may mean rebuilding the differential. Hope this helps!
