Default Turn signal/CC stalk loose

I just picked up a 99 Wagon...the part of the steering column that holds the turn signal and cruise control stalks is loose and rotates about 5-10 degrees when you use either stalk. Is there a way to fix this without romving the column?

Thanks in advance...

My 1999 just started doing this last weekend. It's my understanding two screws behind the steering wheel are loose and need to be tightened. I've ordered the air bag removal tool ($4, eBay) and still need to fetch a 10mm hex driver which I'll get at Sears.

here's how much mine rotates:

"Special" air bag tool (3" long T30 TORX) purchased on eBay for less than $4 incl. shipping:

I need to purchase the 10mm hex driver tomorrow and then I'll grab some pictures of this.

Sleepwalker, thanks for your message. I will check for an access hole tomorrow before taking anything apart.

OK, mission accomplished !!

Sleepwalker is correct about the collar in his diagram needing to be tightened so there is a bit more to this than meets the eye as cruise control and turn signal stalks need to be removed so the entire outer plastic collar can be removed. Access to the large screw that tightens the collar is impossible otherwise...there is no access thru the collar so complete dis-assembly is required.

It took me about 1 hour. Steering wheel retaining bolt is VERY difficult to remove. [:@] News at 11 !

was the screw on the top or underneath?

on new models, they already got the hole on the housing cover for that purpose.
