Do you live on a level road or at the bottom of a hill in Manchester? What mode is the gearbox in W/S or has it got S/E or C/S marked on the switch does this make a difference? Warming the engine up before driving off for 5 minutes will have little effect on the temperature of the transmission fluid. Its a hard thing to diagnose without driving the car I would check a few basics like the ATF level and check the condition of the fluid is it nice and pink or is it smelly and dark brown , speak to the last owner ? Is it all OK once its at normal working temperature ?

What he's describing is normal, just as sleepwalker said. It's a scheme M-B uses to fire up the cats sooner.
