Default Transmission

I have a 2000 E430 with automatic transmission. Yesterday I was at a stoplight, and when I went to take off, the car started to roll back (yes the car was in gear, and I was on an incline) Lol. After turning the car off and restarting it, the car drove fine.
Later, as I left the house on my way to work, the car would not accelerate above 25 mph because it was stuck in first gear.
Now, the car will not go into gear at all. It feels as though the shifter is useless - usually I can feel the shifter putting the transmission in gear, now I don't feel that.

Default linkage grommet

sounds like your linkage grommet, its cheap 5$ right under your lever and can be seen from under the car, it holds the other end of your shift lever to the control rod thats connected to your trans. oder it online and any mechanic or you can install it

It is possible, if the clip broke allowing the rod to fall off.

You need a solid diagnosis, before spending money on parts.
