Default Trans not shifting correctly

I have an 06 E350. The transmission is acting strangely. It will stick in one gear, sometimes I cannot shift between Standard and Comfort mode. When it sticks in one gear the manual shift option does not work. When stuck in one gear if I shift to N and back to drive it will stay in N. If I stop the car and shut it off and then restart it will act normally for a few blocks until it sticks in one gear again. I have been told by a Mercedes tech that it is a "Shift Controller" in the center console. The part runs $600 to $800 plus thrs labor. And it is not a plug and play item it has to be programmed to my car. Are they FOS or do I really have to take it to the stealership?
