Steering Wheel
OK....given that some of us have older rides, I'm sure there are many others in the same boat. The leather in some places on the steering wheel is trashed.
Since the air bag is packed inside, what is out there for a repair/replacement solution?

Uhhh...how do you upgrade to a newer wheel when the factory wheel is packed with an airbag? Surely you're not suggesting that the lay consumer repack an airbag?
Car: '92 300TE 4matic wagon.
$875+ for a custom wood/leather wheel for my model, no thanks. I was thinking more along the lines of a REPAIR kit for the wheel itself. Nobody is saying anything in that link about reusing the airbag as well. If they figure you are going to go 'without', well, that's just plain stupid.
Thanks for the link though!
*Update: I found this place and it's exactly what I wanted! You sew on their cover over the outside circumference of the wheel. Color (blue), looks like a great match and the only thing wrong with my wheel is the outside circumference leather. They provide the stitching, material and directions.

The air bag gets transferred.intack,no repacking.People upgrade old w210 to modern w210 wheels all the time.Other aftermarket suppliers have the covers also so shop around.
also check on mbworld.org forum for your model lots of people upgrade and can offer more suggestions.

Yeah, it's pointless (other than pics & price) to shop around for wheel covers. The place I found looks like they have a great product and I can't find anything negative said about them in other forums. Color looks correct and you sew it on, tie a knot, tuck the extra back under the stitching and drive.
As far as new steering wheels and transferring airbags, I'd have to see someone else do it to my satisfaction, albeit they are intact units, if never been blown. I'm perfectly happy with my stock wheel in size and function. I think a custom, expensive wheel in a wagon would look inane and out of place not rad, IMHO.

I know this is not the answer you are looking for but I'll toss it out anyway. The wifes BMW 325ic steering wheel leather was starting to go due to age and desert heat and so forth. We went ahead and bought this wrap called Wheelskin from BavarianAutoSport (800-535-2002) for $40 and it is absolutely excellent, takes about an hour toinstall but well worth it,I like it much better than the original wheel leather.
I highly recommend it. Good luck...cliff

Actually, the product in much like "Wheelskin" and is leather the same color (or close) to the original seat color. Damn....I just realized it should be BLACK not dark blue. Oh well, it will jazz up the interior a tad! Around $40 as was said.....has holes, you sew it on-they said to expect about an hr or less for installation.
*Update: It IS Wheelskin after all. Great looking, quality product. I am mildly color blind with dark colors, so this "dark blue" looks for all purposes like black to me. What a perfect solution and I plan on doing the same for the leather wheel on my work truck.
