So how many miles does your E class have so far?
I just bought a 1987 300 E class for $1,600. It is Pacific Blue and has 1,200 miles past 2 Hundred thousand Miles. The guy bought it from another guy for $1,500 and sunk $1,500 in it! Replacing Starter, alternator, Waterpump, and master cylinder with the brakes. He added a K&N Air filter. The car drives Solid & Smooth, The inline "6" runs super. I have some minor oil seepage comming from the head cover but I am going to try to replace the head cover gasket. I know I can get a easy 2hundred thousand miles more since I use only Valvoline FULL SYNTHETIC Motor Oil with a Bypass flow Oil Filter with the "Valve".

I have just bought this 1998 E320 3 weeks ago with 111K miles on it. Everything worked and I paid $6K for it and spent $500 on parts; 4 shocks (front & rear) oil changed with Mobile 9 bottles of 0Wx20 and 12 platmium +4 plugs and K&N air filter. It drives great and I am thinking about replacing fuel filter and transmission fluid. I think I will hold off on transmission because I am still debating which fluid I should use and how many quarts. If I replaced the ATF like every 20K, I am wondering, if I can just use Maxlife instead of the Mercedes fluid, which the MB fluid will cost me $20 per quart and the other $6 per quart.

One thing at a time
The MB oil for the tranny is pricey but is the only "recommended" oil. I have used AMSOIL Syn ATF for the past 100K miles with no issues. 2 changes. Doing a tranny drain and fill every 20K is overkill bigtime. Every 60K or so should do you fine. Others will crucify me for recommending anything other than MB fluid.... so be it. I rolled over 218 earlier this week. Still a great car that rolls like hell on the interstate. Love this car. Will be making several cross country trips this summer. Ready to roll.

Cooling System / Trans Fluid
For DIY'ers they say the transmission fluid change is a harder. How difficult is it for the cooling system flush? And, do you recommend only MB approved coolant or is there a substitute? How much would it be (generally) if I take it to a shop and have them do it.
