Was traveling in Ireland a few months ago... turned on the tele and found a silly show put on bya news company. They had a reporter testing to see if a Merc (Mercedes apparently) was really as durable as reported. It was amazing. They took an early 90's Benz wagon and submitted it to several tests... pickaxe to the body (stupid but sad and amazing), then they ran the **** out of it at the track. After that they ran it thru about 20 inches of standing water, then they ripped up the interior. To finish her off they ran her off of the side of a parking garage. They said that they spent about 800 pounds on the ride and that it had about 250K Kilometer on the clock. I was amazed and saddened by watching this but it really went to show that these wagons are seriously tough. I couldn't believe the water test... the ride was coughing water out of the dipstick and it was still running!!! My next Benz... in several years mind you... will be a wagon. Bravo!!

Part of me wants to cry and part of me wants to murder the producer ofthe show.[&o] That's probably the same UK show were I watched them try to destroy a little Toyota truck without success.

I like the comparison of the W124 gas wagon to the legendary diesel cars.I wouldn't be putting the time & money into this car if I thought it wasn't easily capable of 500K.

I have a 1991 190E 2.3. Bought 9 years ago with 199,000km. Rebuilt transmission at 232,000km. Now at 432,000 km(about 268,500 miles) and still going strong. I've used synthetic oils throughout for most of the time after the rebuild. Rides better than my '03 Infiniti i35 and still makes me smile as I cruise at 120km/hr on the highway.

Mmmm....my 03 E500 has 31k on the clock. I didn't need this car...it was a second, or even third childhood thing. In southern Texas, it's almost never got wet, and I carry a Tyvec cover with me to keep the sun off should I need to leave it out for more than a short while. Even the inside of the wheels are polished.

I used to clean the spokes on my E-type with a tooth brush in the 60s. Guess petrol-heads are just born that way.

Default Great Response!

I can't believe the response since I created this thread. I also can't believe that I just rolled over 177K on my E320. It made the trip from VA to FL without any issues, loaded down to the max and still gave me over 30 MPG cruising at 72 MPH the whole way down. My wife thinks I am having a love affair with my car. She's right!!

Cool 1998 e-320

157,341 black exterior, tan interior, OEM chrome wheels;

Mercedes High Mileage Award Badge
Tranny fluid filter change every 60,000
Oil Change fully synthetic every 4,000 miles

Had a recent problem that a Indy shop had to diagnose. Vacuum plug under manifold turned to gum. Car would surge on start then conk out. No codes?
Other than that, I do all the work on it myself. Florida climate has helped the body remain rust free!
This ride still turns heads.

Silent... your car sounds remarkably similar to mine minus the interior color and chrome wheels. Did the vacuum plug start to act up before the car would begin surging etc? I have not had that problem but want to be sure that I know if it's coming...
