Red????

Did you use the schematic design.
You have red for positive, blk for negitive and an odd color for the 3rd probe.
I can't tell you where these have to go to on the 16 pin diagnostic box if you have all red probes/leads

I thought you are asking about the lamp color! , for the bananna plugs I got 2 red and one black, one of the red I covered it with green tape.

OK

You are difficult, but here goes.

Put the red bananna in the #16 socket
Put the blk in #1
Put the green in #8.

Now, turn On key [do NOT start]
Push your switch and hold for 2-3 sec. [ the led should light]
Release the switch and wait .. there will be some blinks coming back to the led . Count them
Repeat this procedure until the number of blinks repeat.
Mark them down and post your findings

OK
If the light did not come on when you pushed the sw, then you have not asembled the tool correctly.

I am assuming you used a momentary push/on switch.

Here is how to test your tool...
Hook red to bat 12v positive
Hook blk to 12v neg.
Press button.. does lamp light?

Next test
Hook red to bat positive
Hook green to bat neg.
Does lamp light ?
If lamp does not light in either of these test, you have the led wired backwards [ wrong polarity]
If it lights with second test, but not first, you have a wrong type switch.
PLEASE do not reply back that you tried these and it does not work
Answer EACH QUESTION soI can continue...

Hi A Dalton,
can this device be used to retrieve fault code from a 1988 300 SE ?
because on the 300SE the place where you get the code from has 8 hole socket and a little push button switch next to it.
thanks

You have a Cal Emiisions car , so you do not need the tool.. the led/sw is already built in to the diagnostic box.
Just follow the code retrieve procedure I posted and count the returning Flash/Blinks...
The tool is for car without the led/sw or to get to the other modules

Thanks for your reply A. Dalton
I am the second owner of this 300SE, and I know the previouse owner bought it in Texas, when I bought it it had 78k miles on it. how can I know if it was a federal or a california version on this car? on the diagnostic socket I don't see any LED.
When I press on the momentary switch next to it, I don't see any LED flashing, thats why I wondered if I can use your test tool to get any stored codes.
thanks again

The key has to be in the RUN posotion for the LED to light
Cal or Fed is written right on the Emmisions sticker under the hood
You say you do not have a led , then you say the led does not light
Which is it ??????????
