grab with both hands on either side of the mirror and yank hard. this is the proper way to do it. install by pushing up hard on it you will see the metal clip that holds it in.

I have tried pulling the mirror hard (not yanking hard), but the actual mirror itself kept comimg off (w/ the wire attached). I need to have the whole unit come off.

Ok that is not supposed to happen the whole assembly should come down, even the part that is attached to the overhead control panel. when you pull it down you will see the large silver/chrome clip that is holding it in. the mirror is not supposed to detach like you mentioned, so obviously that is why it is beening replaced. it should come down as 1 piece.
