Default rear axle replacement-clicking/clunking sound 90 300E

Noise comes and goes from rear end-doesn't sound like a diff problem more like bad CV joints. Are these difficult to replace? I notice there are allen head bolts attaching the axle to the rear diff-do I unbolt these, unbolt the large nut on the outboard side of the axle, move all the brake parts out of the away and it slides out?
I've read some posts about having to drain the diff, pull the cover and remove c-clips from the axle in the diff. But apparently my 90 300E doesn't require going into the diff, any help would be appreciated!
thanks

Do I need a special socket to fit the large star shaped axle nut? Do you know where I could find one?
