Default clicking noise coming from rear axle?any ideas?

Hiya all,
I have owned my mb 190 2.3 8v class 1992 for 8 years and have had no troubles at all..until now. At low speeds there is a clicking noise coming drom the rear axle (noise still ther in any gear and also while clutch is dis-engaged). My car is regulary serviced. Thing is i dont know if the diff is on its way out or what. This clicking noise could be an expensive one me thinks. Can someone please tell me what the problem could be?do i need to change the diff oil maybe?
bye

Continuous or just during transition from power ON to OFF and vice versa?
If the later then quite possibly a loose hub flange / prop connection etc.

If the former then Roller bearing giving notice?

I assume:
Oil level correct?
Oil debris / contamination free?

Problem is that to determine cause you will likely need to strip the assembly.
However this may save damage to the diff and gears.

Maybe start looking to see if you can find a replacement on eBay etc.
Mmm!

the clicking noise (sounds like its coming from left rear wheel)starts at low speeds,in gear and also when clutch is dis-engaged and wears off when drving above 70km/h.It sounds like every turn of the rear wheel something is hitting of something.ive not changed my wheels or anything like that wheel nuts are tight etc, etc. ill take off the rear wheels tonight an d see if i van see anything strange. Ive not got a ramp or pit at my house so its pretty diffucult to dis-assemble the hub or anything like that.I do live close to germany maybe have to bite the bullet and take my wallet to mercedes dealer. Thanks for ur advice ill let you know what happens.
cheers

took rear wheels off,m couldnt really see anything strange. There is a bit of play on the rear axle but is the same on both sides. there is a thin metal shield on the back of the disks.I have gently bent those back a bit, maybe they were fouling the disks.Just went for a short test spin and heard nothing. maybe noise will come back when properly hot or something..Ill keep my finger crossed.
cheers jan

Rotor water shields usually produce a rubbing/scraping noise due to contact with the rotor or trapped debris eg stone.

"Rattle" another possibility as you go over bumps in the road.

Not sure how the shield could have made a "clicking" sound but pleased that problem appears solved.
