Radio identification, repair and/or replacement

Hi all...
When I attempt to power up my radio the following happens (in order):
antenna extends
several second pause
code "E 2" appears on dsiplay
code disappears after several seconds
antenna retracts
According to AlldataDIY, code E2 means:
"Radio control unit, CD Changer and tuner/amplifier will not turn ON due to open circuit or poor/no connection of BUS cable, or no voltage"
How do I determine whether or not my car has the trunk mounted tuner/amplifier? It certainly isn't glaringly obvious, and I'm not about to go ripping trim panels out of the trunk on a wild goose chase.
Putting my VIN in here:
http://www.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng
gives the following info about the radio:
757 Becker radio Grand Prix 2000 - USA (с 01.06.1990 по 31.03.1994)
radio with cassette (loudspeakers and antenna included) (с 22.05.1996 по 11.11.1996)
What are the chances that this radio can be resurrected?
When I asked the local dealer what the code meant, he said it means that the radio needs to be repaired, that they send them out, and that it would be quite expensive.
What is the advisability of putting an aftermarket CD/MP3 player in there? A local stereo dealer tells me that to include the in-console fader adds labour, and if the car does in fact have the trunk mounted amp, then it adds LOTS of labour.
Incidentally, I checked the fuse labelled "radio" and it is fine, and of the correct amperage.
I'd like to check the cable connections, but can't find a way to remove the radio w/o the fancy removal tools. Is there a trick that I can use to accomplish this feat?
Car is a 1992 400E 124.034
Some VIN lookups give it as 420E, but the tag on the trunk in unmistakable![Smile](https://mercedesforum.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)
This vehicle was built for Canada, if that makes any difference (It does on some instrumentation items)
Regards,
Vorpal

Thanks.
I wouldn't have been inclined to take the console apart in any case.
Any idea how to tell if I have the rear-mounted tuner/amplifier?
I had some of the trunk lining out but could see nothing that looked like a radio component.
