Default power assist 1999 E430

My question is, I have a 1999 E430. I am wondering what my car would do if the power assist wasn't working. I know I have power steering but its just not right. When I'm turning it used to almost want to straighten itself out now I seem to have to assist it back to home position. And even when driving straight its very manual I guess is the best way to say it for lack of better terms. there is no smoothness to it. I replaced just about everything on my front end when my rack n pinion went out. I had found broken springs, bad upper control arm and a tie rod out, so I just changed it all out. Ball joints, tie rods, rack, upper control arms, springs, sway bar links. Like I said I know I have power steering, because its still easy to turn the wheel. Its just not smooth like before. If anybody has an idea or can confirm the power assist being the problem I would love to hear from ya. Thanks in advance
