You changed the head gasket?Have you checked for coolant in the oil?You may have a cracked cylinder wall, run a leak down test,to determine where the water is going. Also when the a/c is on does the aux fan turn on and prevent the overheating?

RE: overheating 190e
pressure test cooling system.test strips to check for combustion gas in the coolant.replace the thermostat,it is needed to slow the coolant flow enough to cool the water in the radiator.Old model, check your ignition timing.Too far retarded and it will overheat.

RE: overheating 190e
I had an overheating problem similar to all these on my 88' 190E. I had replaced the thermostat. Checked the fan, flushed the radiator and had even done a flow test on my waterpump at running temp. Like i see in many of these posts it seems as though the car would run fine for 30 minutes to an hour then just spike and boil out. After replacing everything and checking the waterpump i still had the issue. Mind you at this point i hadnt replaced the water pump and it was my last option. Come to find out when the water pump would start climbing torward the 100 degree mark the drive shaft inside would seperate from the impeller and cause a failure and in turn causing the car to overheat unpredictably. After changing the water pump everything now runs fine in the normal range between 90-100 degrees without a hickup. Just thought id share my experience with those of you with similar issues.
