Check for corrosion in the socket and the wires.Or switch on the transmission is loose or broken.

1 bulb or both? only 1 you rule out the switch.and check power to the socket and corrision.

Thank you for response. Non of the lights comes on when I shift to reverse. checked the bulbs and wires and they are good, no crosion. I guessed the swith also bur I can not find the swith. I opened the middle shift comportment and the only switch I noted there is the RP lock valve. If you know where the switch is I appreciate telling me.

Do you have the manual? If both are out the switch may be part of the nss or a seperate switch on the trans itself down by the linkage.I would start out now at the fuse box,in the 99 I have it lists fuse #3 as reverse gear recognition 7.5amp brown.Pop up the rear seat and see if yours lists the same, usually there is a fuse card in a little holder down there.

I do not have the manual but have the wiring diagam for 98 E430 which pretty similar to E320. I checked the fus and mine is fuse #3 also and it is fine. I am pretty sure it is the switch but I do not knoe where it is. I also checked the transmision by the linkage and the only think there is clear hose that goe to instrument pannel and it is oily at the linkage.
