Default metallic clanking noise left front wheel

Recently when driving I thought I was hearing stones or debris fly up from road and hit my front left wheel/fender area...then I made a left turn and heard the pop again. Now it does it on straight aways randomly. Started this morning. Is it a control arm or shock...? Its a E320 2001 sedan

usually the noises are sway bar bushings or lower ball joints. also could be sway bar links. lower control arm bushing can create noise too.

also since you said it sounds like rocks hitting the wheel..made me think..you could have a bad CV joint..they make a clicking noise usually while turning the wheel while driving. usually will not make the noise if the wheel is staight.

It's a rear wheel drive, CV joints are only on front wheel drive cars
