Look for Tips and Information
Thanks for letting me join without alot of email stuff to deal with just to join.
A friend of mine is looking to upgrade from his mid 90's Acura Legend to a late 90's, Early '00 Merc-Benz E Class for around 10-12K.
What are some things he should look out for? He has limited access to the net at the moment so I would like to do some detailed research for him and report by findings.
One thing I do know about is the electrical bugaboos that pop up in these cars.
His main concerns are being able to do most of the work on his car himself. He is an above average "shade tree" tech and is in the middle of restoring a Karman Ghia as well.
If there any tips, ticks or suggestions you might have, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks

RE: Look for Tips and Information
Hi,
Rock solid mechanicals and trim. Electricals pretty good but on circa 1996 cars electronics can be a problem.
This is not just a Mercedes problem. It is an industry problem.
Electronics are extremely difficult for the trained technician yet alone the DIY'er to diagnose and correct. Best advice is make sure all electronics/electricals work when you first get the car (this is often why the car is up for sale!) and if it comes with a warranty ensure it covers electronics and the need to take it to a dealer who has the appropriate equipment and training (more than just a engine/trans fault code scanner) in order to connect to the onboard ECU's, in the event of a problem. Mercedes technicians and parts are extremely expensive.
Electronics are at the heart of so many systems....Engine, Trans, Instrument pack, Service system, Accelerator, Cruise, security, Door Locks, Ignition Key, ICE, Windows, Seats, Wipers, Lights, A/C, ABS, Traction Control etc. etc......and on the very latest vehicles the Brakes (SBC)!
Buy, Enjoy but be aware that on any modern car electronics can be a problem. Just make sure it works before you buy.
