Instrument panel removal

Default Instrument panel removal

My odometer has stopped working on my '89 260E and I need to remove the instrument cluster to send it off for repair. You'd think after 270K miles these things would last... (joking)... Anyway, is this removed from the front or rear? What holds it in? Does anyone have an exploded diagram showing the removal that they could email to me? Thanks in advance!

The whole cluster is held in by friction. You can remove it yourself by making up 2 5" long "L" hooks out of clothes hangars or something msaller preferably. At the end of the 5" rod make a small 90' bend aprox. 1/4" long. First get under the dash and disconnect your speedo cable from the back of the cluster, this will give you room to pull the cluster out to unhook the other electrical connections. Stick the 2 rods in at the left and right side of the panel approx. 1.5 inches below the upper corners and gently pull. It will come out but be careful because your hooks are grabbing a serrated edge designed to be pulled on, if you miss the serrated edge you risk breaking the edges of the panel. Just feel around when you slide them in and then turn them 90' to engage them into the edge of the panel. Oh yeah, on on the hooks make sure you make them with a 90' bend so you have something to hang on to while your pulling the cluster out, making them a true L would not give you anything to hang on to, something like a straight angled Z is what they will look like when your done.</P>

Thanks, I'll try that this weekend when I have time. I tried pulling on it and got it out a little, but didn't know what else was holding it other than the speedo cable. I'll let you know how it goes!

First you pull out the cluster by putting your hands on the left and right side and applying pressure sideways, then you can disconnect the speedometer cable. It is long enough to do this. I did not use any tools, came out without a problem.

Mine seems to be hung up, moves about half an inch then stops. 1994 E320 wagon What could possibly be hindering the progress?
