Idle knock / rattle / thump on ‘95 W124 E300D OM606
Hi everyone, this is my first post here so please be gentle!
This week I set about changing some fuel lines, o-rings, fuel filters as well as draining the tank and cleaning the fuel strainer (it was a black squishy mess) as I noticed there was air in the fuel before the filter. I also changed the serpentine belt while I was at it.
there is no longer air in the fuel lines but the engine has developed a heavy rattle or low frequency knocking / burping. It doesn’t sound very metallic. I can’t seem to locate it and it doesn’t seem to be the classic tensioner rattle all OM6xx engines develop eventually.
Heres a quick video:
as you can here the knocking / burping goes away when it revs a little passed idle and comes back when dropping back down. It sounds like it’s coming from the fuel pump but I really can’t be certain.
Thanks for any of your time and help
George

Hello everyone,
it turned out to be the tensioner after all! Or rather the damper itself. I noticed some pitch black spots of oil on top of the fan pulley snout and it was coming from the damper body. It must have damped its last when I changed the belt.
