Default W124 engine loss of fuel ?

Can anyone help me ? My W124 230 E auto starts OK and if you are gentle with the throttle its fine but when the engine gets to about 3000 r.p.m. it just runs out of go and the only way it will pick up speed is if you ease off on the throttle and eventually it will increase speed and reach about 80 mph and that your lot. The spark plugs are new, fuel filter has been replaced, petrol tank vents OK. I have tried injection cleaner and that makes little or no improvement. I have noticed an increase in noise from the fuel pump but its been noisy for a couple of years. The car has done 110k from new.
