Default Gear shift assembly replacement, issues

Hi all,

my cousin has a 1996 E320. His gear shifter will not go into park or out. Also his key is stuck in the ignition and will not come out. I looked at the assembly and found that a plastic piece broke off the cable that attaches to the break pedal. Assume it is the brake release safety.

Anyone had any issues with this before? Got any repair instructions, etc.

Attached are two photos of the passenger side view of the gear shift assembly in which one of them you can see the cable coming from the brake pedal disconnected from the plastic piece (not seen in the photo)
