'84 300sd won't shift above 2nd gear
I just bought a 300sd from ebay. It shifts ok from 1st to 2nd but not above that. If i shift from drive to neutral and back again it will shift into 3rd but not above that. I have no histiry on the car. The guy i bought it from said that it shifted for him just fine but it's been sitting for a year. I towed it home on a car dolly about 7 hr drive at 60 mph. When i got home i read the manual it said not to tow it more than 70 miles or go faster than 30 mph. Well, i broke both thoes rules. Any suggestions?
I'm not sure what kind of damage you could do by towing the car for 7 hours but I'm sure there could be some heat generated since the pump is not pumping the transmission fluid. Anywho... I would change the transmission filter and fluid before going any further. I'd be willing to bet there is some garbage in there and it isn't able to shift because of some sort of blockage. I've had a similar sort of problem with my '84 300sd and was able to fix it the same way. The only other adjustments I know of on that car are related to shift timing and the 'hardness' of the shifting. When my tranny went 'bad' it went from working fine to not going at all... no forward, no reverse, nothing. I'd hope your problem isn't anything serious.
The front pump gets damaged from towing when the drive wheels are down. I have had cars towed from 25 miles away and the pumps have welded to the torque converter. Yours strangely doesnt sound welded, but you probably have sustained some towing related damage. They are cheaper than expected to repair/rebuild.
