Default Engine Electronics Check engine message.

I just purchased a 1997 E 320. I got it yesterday and drove it around my neighborhood and up on the thruway and it ran fine. Today i was driving slowly around my neighborhood and the check engine message "engine electronics" popped up and the car started missing. Where should i look first. I know i will need to read the code, i just wanted an idea of what might be the problem. I checked to fuel cap it seem tight. That is the only thing i touche before the light came on maybe just a coincidence. I know if i take it to the dealer it will cost me. Thanks

it can be a fuel injector malfunction.

when you turn the engine off and on, the check engine light is gone?

i think you got 104 engine.

without the scanner, all you can do now is to swap the injector. but first you must find out which cylinder is not working since it can be an ignition coil/plug problem too.

to find out which cyl is faulty, pull out the injector connector one by one.

the one which got no further reaction (shaking more) is the faulty cylinder.

to confirm if it's ignition or injection problem, transfer the fuel injector to another cylinder.

if the same cylinder is faulty, then it's ignition.

if the problem moves to another cylinder (where you transfer the injector), then you know it already.

if ignition, you may do the same trial and error by transfering the coil (i don't know what 104 model you got) if it's 3 coil system.

Thanks for the information. I will try some of your troubleshooting technics tomorrow. The dealer i bought it from did not make any mention of a problem. The fault was not on last night, it just appeared today. Not a good start to ownership of this car.
