Default e320 Oil change

here's a quick newb question... i just bought a 97 e320 from a non-benz dealer. i don't know what type of oil is in it now. it was changed before i got the car, but the dealer sends the cars to a local shop for all work, and neither could confirm oil brand/type. regardless, here's the Q.

i've heard horror stories about switching an older car to synthetic oil(mobil 1 etc)

things leak, expensive repairs, the like.
i personally had to shell out 1200 for a seal replacement that required the motor to be pulled to get to it on my 1995 nissan altima. after going synthetic.

i don't don't don't have the coin to pay for major ( or really even minor ) repairs on a benz so shortly after buying it, but i'd like to maintain the car as well as possible. suggestions for oil type @ next change?

btw, no warranty on car, apart from 3mo/3000 mi lemon warranty, which will be over before it needs an oil change.

thanks all
