Recently got oil hi indicator on my '02 ML500. Book says too much oil. Dipstick is halfway between full and add mark. Change oil and filter with fresh. Still getting oil hi. Seems to occur the first time when the water temp gets to about full operating temp (just before opening of tstat?) . No relation to engine speed or load. Will do it 2 or 3 times during a trip. Verified oil level is OK (warm engine, shut down, wait about 1-2 minutes and check stick).
Faulty/sticking sensor?? What else to look for?

yes pretty common, oil level sensor fault most likely.

yes you can do it yourself. you will need a new o-ring for the sensor and there is no oil pan gasket so you will need sealant to seal the pan.the sensor is right above the lower oil pan on the right side,... sort ofbehind the alternator.

 

the new sensor will come with a new o-ring, you'll need torx socket to r/r the lower oil pan
