E320 conversion to V8?
I am trying to find a nice 94-95 E320 wagon and intend to get more hp out of it. It would be easier if I could get a wagon with a v8 already in to, but it appears mercedes never made them with a v8. I need the space of the wagon.
I know I can get the motor/trans from a 500sl for around 4-6k depending on condition, but how hard is it to get the v8 in there? I know mercedes did it on the 500e, but were there major changes to get it in there?
I suppose I could get a the 4.3 v8 instead of the 5.0, would that be an easier transplant?
Thanks!

I just did a search on www.cars.com for all mercedes wagons. There were over 500, and the only v8 wagons were the new ones at 40-50k. New one is not an option. My wife will freak if I tell here I am buying a Z06 and a new mercedes.
If I can get a front clip for E420 or a 500E, shouldn't the parts swap out? Trans, engine, ecu's, wiring, fuel pump or regulator, etc?
The big thing I am worried about is the structure of the front end. Did the shock towers sheetmetal change location(ie wider to take a wider v8 motor)? Is the engine cradle different, or just the motor mounts? Is the trans externally the same size or does the trans tunnel have to be hammered out or cut out and custom welded?

Let me ask another question drmotorhead. Why you want to spend so much money and effort to get your wife V8?
I own 2 vehicles with 320 engine and have more power, than I need. I am towing 5000+ lb trailer with ML and it will go on overdrive most of the time.
Are you one of those "power freaks", or your wife is?

I am the power nut. My wife just does not get it. I would throw a twin turbo V8 in any car I could get my hands on if I had the time and my wife would tolerate it. She is already not too thrilled about the Z06 on order, since I have only had the current vette for 9 months. I just can't help myself.
The van is for a daily driver, as I need to haul marketing materials and occaisionally office equipment around south Florida. I just cant bring myself to get an SUV or truck or minivan.

Personally, I would think it would be too much of a bother. That's not to say you couldn't do it, but I'd buy a vehicle with a V8 already in it if that's what you wish for.
Then again, drop that 502 Chevy, put a blower on it and go for it!
