E 320 CDI - Noise Levels and Emissions ??
Hi all,
I am planning on getting an E 320 CDI. I am bit concerned about the Diesel engine noise that may be present and the Black smoke it would emit. Anybody using a CDI diesel engine particularly the E 320 would be able to clear things out for me. Your comments will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have driven the 2005 and 2006 CDI and they are neither particularly loud nor do they emit black smoke. They are almost as quiet as a gas engine, get over 34 MPG, and can run on straight biodiesel. Plus they are made by one of the best diesel motor manufacturers in the world. Before purchasing the car, which I am totally in love with and planning on purchasing in a few years myself when my income gets high enough, I would research whether they have fixed their electrical problems. For a number of years in the E-Class I have come to understand that there are some fluctuations and irregularities in the electrical systems that cause problems. Some people have claimed that the problem was only during 2003 models, but I have spoken with Mercedes mechanics who have seen the problem since 1998. I drive a 1998 E300 turbodiesel which is how I found out about the problems. My '98 is currently for sale with under 80,000 miles simply because I will not be able to afford the electrical component repairs once my extended warranty runs out, but I have to say that it is such an amazing car to drive that I would keep it in spite of the fact that there are those few reliability issues if not for the money issue. I am sooo sold on Mercedes technology as a matter of fact, that if money weren't an issue I would not even consider driving anything other than a Mercedes.
THe 2005/2006 CDI model is just beautiful and it drives like a sportscar. With over 200 horsepower and an incredibly well-designed interior, I have been recommending them to people who are in the market for new cars.
I hope this helps!

CDI is different from other diesel engine.
injectors are electronically controlled. it got knock sensors too.

I drive a 1999 E300TD with 79656 miles on it. It is a awsome automobile. Very very little smoke and the diesel noise is minor. At crusingins pped you do not hear it. I have had this auto for just over 1 year. I had one electric problem which turned out to be a faulty battery terminal on the cable. Remember to plug it in at night during New England winters (in my case) and it starts every time. The CDIs have vastly superior electronic engine controls over the 300TDs which makes for a much more efficient and cleaner burn, thus further reducing smoke and nosie; you really can't go wrong with a CDI. My next MB diesel will be a CDI.
