Hi,

I have a 97 E420 with 107K. The transmission was erratic....downshifting on its own, jumping gears, and slipping between 2 and 3. The TCU was completely filled with transmission fluid. I drained the transmission, installed a new seal at the harness, and cleaned the TCU and harness connections with contact fluid. There was no metal in the transmission pan. I reinstalled the TCU and now the car will not shift out of 1st gear. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

 

you mean will not shift out in 2nd gear. emergency mode.

you need computer to delete the fault first. if that doesn't work, replace the ETC module.

 

Correct. It will not shift to 2nd gear. Check engine light is not on. Do I need to go to a dealer to delete the fault?

 

Also, could you give me a description and location of the ETC....thanks again.

 

it's the TCU that you cleaned. the same thing.

are you sure the it is on the first gear now and not on the 2nd gear? i said it will not shift out of second gear means it stays on the 2nd gear all the time and in limp home mode.

if it is stuck on the first gear, then that is another problem.

 

Oh, i wasnt sure if it was the same thing. I'm pretty sure its stuck in first gear. I dont feel it changing gears at all and the RPM's only go up without any drop. Before I cleaned the ETC it at least shifted. *shrug*

it goes to emergency mode because you turn on that ignition with the ETC removed.

Ok. But i did not turn on the ignition until after it was reinstalled. Assuming it is in emergency mode...is there anyway I can clear that myself? Or must I take the car to the dealer??

 

to the dealer or any place where they got the scanner.
